lifeguards

Med-o-lark Lifeguards keep the lakefront safe by supervising swim areas, monitoring campers during all water activities, and responding effectively to emergencies. Lifeguards may also leave other waterfront activities such as swimming lessons, small crafts, sailing, and boating.

Lifeguards also serve as Cabin Counselors who mentor, guide, and serve as a role model for campers, fostering a safe, inclusive, and creative environment where children can explore, grow, and connect. Counselors live in cabins with campers, assist with daily routines, and lead or support activities across the arts, athletics, and outdoor programs. You embody Med-o-lark’s mission to create a space where self-expression, independence, and community thrive — free from screens, competition, and performance pressure.
What you'll do

  • Keep the waterfront safe: Monitor swim and boating areas during all activity periods and free swims, enforce rules consistently and respectfully, and stay alert and ready to respond. Run head counts and swimmer checks throughout each session, and provide immediate rescue and first aid when needed.

  • Open and close the waterfront: Help with daily setup and shutdown, including equipment inspection and maintenance.

  • Prepare for emergencies: Take part in regular safety drills and training, keep your rescue and CPR/First Aid skills sharp, and promptly report any incidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions to the Head of Waterfront.

  • Support campers: Model a positive attitude toward water safety, build camper confidence and enjoyment through attentive supervision, and help every camper feel included, safe, and respected.

  • Be part of the team: Work closely with other lifeguards, counselors, and activity staff. Join all-staff meetings, trainings, and camp events, and help with special events like regattas and swim tests.
